On my doctor’s recommendation, I’ve been taking an omega-3 fish oil and krill oil supplement. These are my observations and my MegaRed advanced 4-in-1 omega-3 review.
Why I bought an omega-3 supplement
For over a year, I’ve been giving my dog omega-3 supplements. Since then, I’ve noticed he’s been more playful and had better joint health.
In addition, the omega-3s have made my dog’s fur much softer. His fur was so soft, in fact, that strangers who petted him noted that his fur was ‘very soft.’
Well, I thought, if the fish oil omega-3 supplements were so beneficial for my dog, could they also help me? The obvious answer to my rhetorical question was ‘yes.’
That’s why I went shopping for my own fish oil and omega-3 supplements.
My MegRed advanced 4-in-1 omega-3 supplements are keeping me healthy. They’ll help you, too!
High and low price points for omega-3 supplements
As I shopped online and my grocery store’s vitamin aisles, I noticed that the omega-3 supplements had a wide range of prices. Some were enticingly inexpensive, while others seemed prohibitively high-priced.
As I shopped, I learned that the most expensive omega-3 supplements included krill oil in addition to regular fish oil.
Krill oil benefits
What’s so great about krill oil that makes it worth the extra money? Well, the anecdotal evidence suggests that krill oil is more easily absorbed into the bloodstream.
In addition, krill oil contains a high content of EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid). Both EPA and DHA are beneficial fatty acids that improve our brain and cardiovascular health.
However, I haven’t found any scientific studies conducted with krill oil on humans. Despite that, I did find studies on rats. According to a recent study reported at the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), krill oil, “EPA and DHA levels in the [rat] brain were slightly higher” with krill oil as opposed to fish oil.
Since krill oil does contain a higher percentage of beneficial fatty acids that appear to be absorbed well (at least in rats), then maybe the extra cost is justified.
Most people do not consume enough healthy fatty acids
Both fish oil and krill oil contain beneficial omega-3 fatty acids, mostly in the form of EPA and DHA. Unfortunately, most people in the United States do not get enough of those healthy fatty acids from their diets.
I’m certain I was one of those people. Because of my own fatty acid deficiencies, the cells in my body weren’t living up to their full potential.
But according to many studies, if I consume more of the omega-3 fatty acids found in fish and krill oil, I could improve my health.
Benefits of fish and krill oil omega-3s
1. Relieves arthritis and promotes good joint health
The fatty acids in fish and krill oil can relieve arthritis pain and swelling. In addition, the omega-3s reduce inflammation in our cells, connective tissues, and joints.
In the past, I have experienced painful arthritis in my hands. Since I’ve been using my omega-3 supplements, I haven’t had a single experience of debilitating pain from arthritis.
2. Healthy cardiovascular system
The reduced inflammation that relieves our arthritic pain can also improve our cardiovascular health. Omega-3 fatty acids reduce the inflammation in our blood vessels, while also lowering bad cholesterol (LDL) levels and increasing good cholesterol (HDL) levels.
Less inflammation throughout our cardiovascular system can also reduce harmful high blood pressure. As most of us know, high blood pressure is a silent killer that can slowly destroy our vital internal organs.
The healthy fatty acids in fish and krill oil is a total package of good cardiovascular health.
3. Improves cognition
Dementia runs in my family, so I’m very concerned about the health of my brain. Thankfully, the abundant DHA and EPA fatty acids in fish and krill oil may also reduce the risks of Alzheimer’s disease , along with other cognitive disorders.
However, healthy omega-3 fatty acids have not been proven as an effective treatment for cognitive decline. In addition to this supplement, we should also challenge our brains each day by learning new things. We should also foster stimulating and supportive social relationships.
But the good news is that high levels of DHA, which is the principle omega-3 fatty acid in our brains, has been an effective preventive against cognitive decline.
4. Promotes good eye health
According to the American Optometric Association, the omega-3 fatty acids found in fish and krill oil are essential for “proper visual development and retinal function.”
Before taking my omega-3 supplements, I had developed string floaters in my left eye. My ophthalmologist told me my symptoms were age-related, and should disappear over time. But, she suggested I try fish oil supplements as a preventive measure.
After a month, most those annoying black string floaters had almost completely disappeared. Now, I can’t say that my omega-3 supplement helped clear up the condition, but it might help prevent it from happening again.
In addition, my ophthalmologist suggested that healthy levels of fatty acids in my body might also prevent diabetic retinopathy and macular degeneration. I’m a long-term type 1 diabetic, and diabetic retinopathy is a real threat to my vision.
Over time, I hope the DHA and EPA from my omega-3 supplements will keep my eyes healthy as I enjoy my senior years.
My MegaRed advanced 4-in-1 omega-3 review
Here’s what I’ve observed after using my MegaRed advanced 4-in-1 900 mg softgels for a month.
Softgels were easy to swallow
Even though my 900 mg omega-3 supplements were very large, they were surprisingly easy to swallow. The gelatin outer shell was smooth, and felt like it was lubricated. Swallowing was very easy.
No fishy taste or smell
I wasn’t able to detect any fishy smell, or any repulsive aftertaste from the MegaRed fish and krill oil supplements. Even an hour later, I didn’t notice an aftertaste, fishy breath, or indigestion.
Once, I even sliced the gelatin outer shell open. Then, I squeezed all the oil out onto my tongue. It had almost a pleasant fish taste, and even reminded me a little bit of eating oysters.
As time went on, though, the fishy taste lingered on my tongue too long and did become a little unpleasant. To avoid that experience, I just swallow the whole pill.
Then, the gelatin can slowly digest and release the fish and krill oil so my body can absorb all the healthy fatty acids.
My hip pain went away
After only a week of using the omega-3 supplement, my minor hip pain disappeared. I was so happy!
Almost every day I workout on my recumbent exercise bicycle. Of course, I stretch before and after to reduce risk of injury. But, I had still had a persistent hip pain after exercising.
As far as I can tell, the fatty acids from my MegaRed omega-3 supplements have alleviated my hip pain. I actually feel younger, and can exercise longer.
My results might only be coincidental, and other factors might be contributing to my less-painful hip joints. Despite my lack of scientific controls, however, I’m convinced about the health benefits for my joints.
Most of my eye floaters have disappeared
As I noted above, I had suddenly developed floaters. They were the nasty kind of floaters that looked like squiggly black strings.
My ophthalmologist told me that my eyes would be healthier if I started using fish oil supplements. Since then, my floaters have almost completely disappeared.
I hope that as I continue to use the MegaRed omega-3 supplements, my vision will continue to improve.
Nagging question about the percentage of krill oil
After reading about the superior benefits of krill oil, I skeptically wondered how much krill oil is actually in this product. The manufacturer noted that their product contains a “proprietary blend of fish oil and krill oil”.
My guess is that the fish oil is much less expensive to obtain than the krill oil. The skeptic in me suggests that the manufacturer would use the least amount of krill oil to maximize profits.
There’s nothing wrong with maximizing profits. Without profits, businesses could not provide services, and MegaRed would not be able to provide this healthy product.
Still, I wish I knew the percentage of krill oil to fish oil. Unfortunately, that information is “proprietary” and the consumer will never know for sure.
On the box, there’s a misleading notation that reads, “The krill used in this product is 100% pure…” That 100%, however, does not indicate the percentage of krill oil to fish oil.
Pollock fish oil
The fish oil in this product comes from pollock. This cold-water fish is an abundant variety, and usually less expensive. I often buy pollock fish, and find it mild-tasting, but still very healthy.
As a consumer, I would like to know the percentage of pollock fish oil compared to the percentage of krill oil in this product. Maybe there are less expensive supplements available with a higher percentage of krill oil.

MegaRed advanced 4-in-1 omega-3 review
Despite my reservations about the high prices of this product, I still highly recommend the MegaRed omega-3 fish and krill oil supplement.
In fact, I wish I had started my omega-3 regimen earlier in my life. Maybe I could have completely avoided my eye floater problems, and maybe the arthritis in my hands wouldn’t have gotten so bad.
Now, my vision and joint pain is much better. In addition, the DHA and EPA in this product will guard against cardiovascular disease, protect against diabetic retinopathy, and limit cognitive decline as I age.
