Stock Ideas

Decades ago, Pfizer was a high-flying stock. Today, along with other consumer goods stocks like Altria Group, it’s on the bargain table.

When it comes to buying stocks that I’d like to hold for a long time, my first priority is a high-yielding stock with above-average dividend increases each year. Both Pfizer and Altria Group have those attributes.

Read more about why I recommend both of these stocks for dividend income and price appreciation.

Consumer goods stocks have corrected, and many offer attractive dividend yields.

I love stocks that pay a dividend. In the past, I have found that consumer products stocks only offer an attractive yield around 4% after a substantial market decline. However, the overall stock market is still holding up, and many sectors are doing well.

That’s another story with the secure and consistent consumer products stocks. Some, like The Kraft Heinz Company, have seen an almost 40% decline in their stock. At these lower prices, their dividend yield is compelling. There are other stocks like KHC, also. Please read my recommendations.

Stock market pros hate gold. Gold mining stocks are universally hated, and that’s what makes them cheap.

Throughout my investing life, I have been a contrarian investor. When I shop for clothing and groceries, I always look for the stuff on sale. I use the same approach when I am looking for potential stocks to buy.

To make the most money, I have found, it is best to buy industries that are out of favor and cheap.

Contrarian investors can bet against conventional wisdom and win.

Through the years, I have experienced lots of manias. Thankfully, as a contrarian investor, I have avoided paying to much for stocks. However, there was one time in my life that I really messed up — I got caught up in the real estate hype in the mid-2000’s. That was a mess, and one I hope to never repeat again!

I’ve always believed it pays to be a contrarian investor. That’s why I am closely watching SPXS. It’s leveraged protection against a bear market.

Today, stock market investors are bullish and consumers are confident. Those extreme market sentiment levels have me concerned. I want to protect my hard-earned stock market gains in this 8+ year bull market of stocks.

I bought a pair of shoes from this retailer, and since then, I discovered DSW is a great value stock.

DSW is off about 60% from its 5-year high, has no debt, and plenty of cash on hand. What’s not to love? I will continue to buy shoes there. The next time, though, I will get my purchase shipped to my door. It’s so convenient shopping at DSW!

It’s been a long time since investors have experienced a bear market. What can we do to protect ourselves when the inevitable bear starts gnawing at our profits? One protection might be to buy SH.

SH is an ETF designed to have an inverse, or opposite, return of the S&P 500® Index. Therefore, SH should perform well in a bear market while other shares are declining.

As world leaders threaten each other with nuclear annihilation, investors need some gold insurance. The best gold insurance is the stock of gold miners.

Gold miners have not participated in our current 8-year bull market. In fact, most gold miners are much less expensive today than they were in 2008. Gold miners might be the best gold insurance for our unstable world.

Now, stock investors have a shorter settlement cycle. It’s called the T+2, or transaction date plus 2 consecutive business days. It means stock sellers have faster access to their cash.

T+2 was overdue in our digital age. I’m looking forward to the day when stock investors can benefit from a T+1 stock settlement cycle. In the meantime, T+2 makes the settlement process more efficient.

Encana Corporation is a profitable oil and gas company operating in the United States and Canada. It is making money selling commodities that are in a bear market.

Because Encana is profitable now, I can only imagine what might happen to its stock price once the oil and gas oversupply dissipates. Oil and gas prices have already increased from their lows, and I think Encana’s stock price has great potential for price appreciation.

Retail stocks are on sale! Some won’t survive Amazon’s competition. Other stores, like Target, will continue to innovate and reward investors with increasing dividends.

In the last 10 years, Target’s dividend has quadrupled. Despite that impressive record, though, Target’s stock price has been punished along with other retail stocks. That means Target’s stock is in the bargain bin, and I’m a buyer. You should buy TGT, too. If you’re young enough, this stock could make you wealthy.

Ethanol is a renewable, low-carbon energy product that is cheaper than gasoline. PEIX produces and markets ethanol.

PEIX’s stock price is low, just like most oil company stocks. However, global oil use continues to climb. More ethanol will be added to gas. 800 gas stations in 29 states offer E15, or gas with 15% ethanol, for sale. I like PEIX stock and would buy at these low prices.

In the current retail slump, Macy’s and Target are good long-term investments.

Both Macy’s and Target pay good dividends with above-average recent increases. Macy’s has valuable real estate that is not reflected in the current stock price. Target is a large department and grocery store chain with wide aisles, and clean displays. Target even raised its dividend during the Great Recession.

Mutual funds offer low-cost ways to invest in the stock market today.

Both Schwab and Vanguard have competitive offerings that allow the first-time investor with a small amount of money to participate in the stock market.

Oil companies are pumping cheap oil, but cheap oil might not last.

We have population growth. There are more cars on the road. Developing countries will use more oil as their citizens emulate U.S. drivers. Marathon Oil (MRO) is one tempting buy.

Fertilizer companies are on the bargain table and I like it.

We have population growth and increasing demand for fertilizer. We need to squeeze more crop yield out of less land.

Make your money work for you — buy stocks that increase their dividends

Start young with a small investment, and by the time you retire, you might become a secret millionaire (or at least you’ll be financially comfortable).

My experiences with online stock brokers have been mostly good.

They save today’s investor lots of money, and keep expenses low.

Lower fees means higher investment returns.

No-load mutual funds with low annual fees provide higher returns for the mutual fund investor.

Refining stocks are unloved by momentum investors and are relative bargains.

I especially like HFC and VLO. They pay nice dividends and offer potential dividend and stock price growth.

Are stocks too expensive? Is a recession coming?

Sir John Templeton urged us to buy when there is “maximum pessimism” and sell “when they are desperate to buy”.

Macy’s stock price down over 10% today after lower revenues and disappointing earnings.

Can they survive as a brick-and-mortar store?

Gold mining stocks have value and are ready for another move up.

Read my analysis for Goldcorp (G) and Harmony Gold Mining (HMY), two undervalued gold mining stocks. They might be a good hedge against political and financial instability in the world today. Gold and gold mining stocks are also good hedges against inflation and even rising interest rates. Remember the late 1970’s?

Three stocks in the retail sector look interesting.

I own shares in the smallest retailer, have never owned shares in the largest retailer, and have traded the other well-known retailer. They are:

— Amazon (AMZN – I have never owned shares)
— Macy’s (M – I have traded shares occasionally)
— New York & Company (NWY – I currently own shares)

Please read my analysis of this unloved, bricks-and-mortar sector of the retail market.
